What professional tips or advice would you like to share about your profession?
I have come to appreciate that one of the most important qualities for an educator is patience. It’s essential to remember that learners need the steps and thought processes behind decision-making explained clearly and broken down into smaller steps. We often find ourselves repeating information, but we must maintain our enthusiasm for teaching, allowing students to ask questions and guiding them through the thought process. I see it as a challenge to develop better methods of explaining and engaging our students. When you observe that a concept has become clear, and a student can execute the procedure effectively it is incredibly rewarding.
What is your #1 reason for becoming an ADEA member?
I enjoy meeting educators from other institutions to learn with and from them. I have met many incredible people and enjoy our collaboration and support for each other.
What has been the most rewarding experience of your career?
I recently attended the American Dental Association (ADA) annual conference in Chicago on the integration of medicine in dentistry. I ran into two former students and was so proud of seeing the professionals they have become. Meeting former students, witnessing their continued growth, and hearing about their achievements and satisfaction with their career choices is incredibly gratifying.
How has ADEA Connect been useful to you?
It is a wonderful way to communicate with our sections and SIGs. It also is a great way to learn about what is going on with other sections and sigs in ADEA.
What is your favorite hobby or place to travel?
I love hiking on the local Los Angeles trails or traveling across the country. I am not picky. As long as I am with friends and family or meeting new people, I am content. I look forward to traveling more abroad.
