Say Hello to Elizabeth Van Tubergen, D.D.S., Ph.D.
What professional tips or advice would you like to share about your profession?
I would push fellow colleagues to move out of their comfort zone to learn new skills whether that be in dentistry, education or leadership. You learn more when engaging with others and new technologies. It has been instrumental in my career path.
What is your #1 reason for becoming an ADEA member?
I have found it to be very useful in connecting with other like minded individuals in dental education. This is not limited to other dental faculty but faculty and staff in all realms of dental education. I’ve been able to collaborate with them and see how different schools approach the same challenges.
What has been the most rewarding experience of your career?
The most rewarding experience of my career has been using my passion for education and dentistry to be able to assist in the creation of new courses at the school for the Selectives Program - an elective program at UMSoD. This gives students the opportunity to tailor their own education journey and help them develop skills that will allow them to become fantastic dental clinicians.
How has ADEA Connect been useful to you?
I was able to initially find many opportunities to work with a section. Through ADEA Connect, I got to work with the Women in Leadership Section. I am their current Secretary and have been involved with many of their activities as we try to engage our members and create more opportunities for them.
What is your favorite hobby or place to travel?
I love getting outside and enjoying what Michigan has to offer. I grew up very near to Lake Michigan so I love swimming, boating and all things water. I enjoy traveling with my family to all of my favorite places and introducing my kids to activities that I was passionate about as a kid such as swimming, soccer and reading.
